Performance
We tested the lens on a Canon 6D body with all lens aberration controls switched on. and the results were amazing. Autofocus was fast and precise.
A tinge of darkening was observed at extreme corners at f/1.8 and 2, but not so much to be of concern. Darkening completely disappeared at f/2.8. Slight flare was observed at f/1.8 in strong against-the-light images. It vanished after stopping down the lens, though ghosting increased with narrower apertures, peaking at f/16. Having said that, we should give the lens full points for completely eliminating chromatic aberration.
The Sigma 135mm left us in awe, producing excellent sharpness across the aperture range. All apertures were perfectly usable, though f/1.8 and 16 appeared slightly unsharp. It was difficult to find the sweet spot, but it appeared to be f/2.8 or 4. In case of peripheral sharpness, you would do well to choose between f/4 and 11. the lens produced a tinge of pin cushion distortion, but we would not consider it worth losing your sleep.
Value for Money
The Sigma 135mm Art lens retails at an MRP of Rs.119,000. We would consider this quite competitive for a fast prime that delivers top-notch performance. |SP

VERDICT
The Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art lens is one of the best you can buy in this focal length. The lens produces excellent sharpness throughout the aperture range and controls chromatic aberration like a champion. The price might seem a little on the higher side compared to similar lenses in the same focal length, but this is virtually unmatched in sharpness. You might also lament about the lack of Optical Stabilisation (OS), but we trust Sigma to have done it on purpose to eliminate any possible instability in the lens due to the ever-shifting group of elements. Certainly a Best Buy.
