SMART PHOTOGRAPHY enters its eighteenth year of publication with this issue. It has been quite a journey so far. In 2005, digital had just started replacing film. In 2022, the industry looks quite different with smartphones having captured a large chunk of the lower end of the imaging market. D-SLR cameras have been replaced by mirrorless cameras and camera makers have moved up market. Compact cameras are close to being history and medium format has just about survived. The last two years have been awful, both for the imaging industry and for publications focussed on the industry. Beating all doomsdayers, we have survived and so has the bulk of the imaging industry, albeit in a different form. Our digital readers are now a multiple of print readers. Having said that, print readers are showing immense loyalty, encouraged, perhaps by the additional credibility that print enjoys. A big ‘thank you’ is due to our loyal readers, advertisers and employees.
This issue also carries the much awaited Smart Photography Awards. In an otherwise challenging year, camera manufacturers responded magnificently to the demand for new products. The prestigious CAMERA OF THE YEAR AWARD was a hard fought contest between Nikon and Sony. Eventually, Nikon prevailed. Our heartiest congratulations to Nikon for winning this prestigious award for their excellent Z 9.
