A strobe with a ‘beauty dish’ was placed opposite the model, high enough to cause a shadow under the nose in what is typically known as Butterfly Lighting. The catch-light is seen around 12 O’clock position. Here, the backdrop was white but I wanted it grey, as a white backdrop tends to attract attention away from the subject. Hence the backdrop was placed a bit away from the model and since the light falling on the backdrop was less compared to that on the model’s face, the white backdrop turned grey as required.
A rectangular shaped soft box was placed to the right of the camera, pointing down at approximately 45°.This has caused a soft nose shadow and catchlight in both the eyes at 1 O’clock position.
This is also a one-light set-up, but with a Thermocol reflector to fill-in. The light used here was an octagonal soft box placed to the right of the camera at almost 90° to the camera/lens axis. A Thermocol was used as a reflector to get some detail on the shadow side of the face.
An octagonal soft box was used to the right of the camera (pointed down at approximately 45°) which was carefully adjusted to create the inverted highlighted triangle on the shadow side of the face. This what is known as Short Lighting. Intentionally, no fill-in was used.
