Gujarat’s Vibrant Wildlife- A Pictorial Journey, is an annex to the series of wildlife books by author and award winning photographer Diinesh Kumble.
Gujarat, often associated with the majestic Asiatic Lion, has a rich geography to boast of. Flamingos, desert cats, sea cows, you name it and you’ll be amazed at the variety the state holds. In this book, the fauna of Gujarat have been categorized into topics such as Grassland, Wetland, Forest, Marine, and Desert.
The compilation has all the right constituents of a perfect wildlife photography book; close-up images of animals and birds, their habitat, behaviour, appearances etc. With brevity, the author has chronicled the vast biodiversity throughout the region. The astounding images, taken in a span of 14 weeks, are accompanied by concise write ups, providing the readers with basic information on the bird/animal, along with their characteristics. The colours are breathtaking, and they show you an awe-inspiring side of Nature. The photographer has captured a medley of amusing expressions, varying from nonchalant to pure savage. If one does decide to visit Gujarat’s sanctuaries, locating a specific specie will be easy since the author has tactfully included the local name (Gujarati) of every bird/animal featured here. Sprinkled with little known, albeit intriguing facts, readers can gather a lot of information from each page.
Maps (not to scale) have been provided at the start of each section to depict the topography, location of the sanctuaries, and the species that exist there.
Being a pictorial coffee table book, don’t go expecting a guide to the technical details of wildlife photography. It’s main purpose is to promote Gujarat’s vast treasure trove of exquisite animals and birds, and to add to the charisma of your book collection.
Also included at the end of the book, is a chart that lists out all the sanctuaries in Gujarat, the year of establishment, area, and location, and the major species that reside there.
Commissioned by the Information Department of the Government of Gujarat, ‘Gujarat’s Vibrant Wildlife’ shows you the strong, yet hidden gems of our country, and gives you the option of not travelling to foreign locales to see such magnificent wildlife. With the numbers dwindling rapidly, conservation is the need of the hour. Awareness is the first step towards this, and through the medium of print, the Department aims at promoting this message. The book is priced at an MRP of Rs.1,495 and is expected to hit the stores soon.
