Olympus Corp. is moving to expand its endoscope business in Asia by promoting training for doctors and offering lower-priced models.
Through these steps, the company hopes to triple Asian sales to around 120 billion yen (US$1.46 B) by fiscal 2017. In China, Olympus plans to operate a fourth training center in addition to the three in Beijing and Shanghai. The new facility will open in the south by the year ending March 2017. In India, where Olympus set
up a subsidiary in 2010, it will collaborate with medical departments of universities and hospitals to broaden an existing training program. Olympus boasts a 70% share of the global market for gastroenterological endoscopes, and it believes the key to greater sales is by increasing the number of trained doctors.
