“I consider myself extremely privileged to be able to see the world as a photographer. I make time to disconnect from my mundane urban existence, to create opportunities to be one with nature, witness different ways of life, and discover myself.
Photography gives me a fresh and wider perspective on the natural world, civilization and solitude.” says Banglore-based travel and wildlife photographer Kartiki Gonsalves.
“My journey began when I borrowed my parents’ point and shoot Minolta for a school trip to Europe and the rest is history. In order to gain flexibility I invested in a Canon EOS TI and a Fuji Finepix digital camera. With time, those fell short too, hence I upgraded to the Nikon D70. This camera gave me the freedom to experiment with light and exposure. It is an old companion who produces beautiful photographs. The latest addition to my camera line is the D300”, she adds.
“Having trained under India’s premier lens man- Iqbal Mohamed, I picked up the major tricks of the trade. I also learned to be a stickler for detail and composition. When I look for a good photo opportunity, I have two main goals. The first is to capture people and places in their diversity. The second is to use my camera to isolate and emphasize beautiful and unique geometrical patterns.”
Speaking about how she keeps creativity dynamic Kartiki says, “Traveling is educational and spiritual. The rush of getting to soak up interesting cultures, diverse cuisines and places is invigorating. As I learn about the great variety of people, cultures and landscapes in the world, I also learn more about myself. While traveling I am challenged to represent the best aspects of our culture and to learn and adapt to new cultures. Traveling is mentally stimulating as it compels me to question my core values. I ask if habits and attitudes are essential parts of me, or are they simply a baggage from my earlier life. I love arriving at a destination and gearing up for the whole day with the hope that I can take pictures that will capture the essence of this new place.”
“So what really drives me to capture a picture? Euphoria! I love being able to return to the moment to re-experience its joy and excitement whenever I want. It is a pleasure to share the images and the experiences that led to them with others.”, she voices.
