It is not often that imaging magazines talk about camera sensor manufacturers, but a recent study by Nikkei highlights the major manufacturers of CMOS sensors and their respective market shares. Sony Semiconductor Solutions remained the market leader with a 48.6 % market share in 2020. Next was Samsung Electronics with a 20.1 % share. Omnivision of China followed with 12.4 %. S Y Hynix of South Korea came in next with 4 %. On Semiconductor of the United States came in fifth with 3.8 %. When you buy a digital camera, the chances are nearly 50 % that the sensor will be from Sony.
The same Nikkei study gives the pecking order in 2020 for all digital cameras as well. The Top 5 are Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm and Panasonic in that order.
