Sony Corp. and Olympus Corp. established “Sony Olympus Medical Solutions Inc.” on April 16, aiming to align Sony’s cutting-edge electronics technologies in areas such as imaging with Olympus’ manufacturing and R&D expertise in the area of medical products, including lenses and optical technologies.
The new company plans to establish a new medical and imaging systems business to deliver comprehensive solutions for operating rooms worldwide. The company aims to bring the field of medical surgery utilizing endoscopes to patients, doctors and people all over the world. The company will develop new surgical endoscopes with 3D capabilities which can observe body organs and carry out surgical operations and treatment without cutting the patients’ body. Images captured by the endoscope will be displayed for diagnosis on high-resolution displays in 4K quality.
Headquartered at Hachioji, Tokyo, near Olympus’ R&D center, the new company is capitalized at 50 million yen (Sony 51%, Olympus 49%). Toru Katsumoto from Sony has been appointed as President and Representative Director, and Takahashi Fukaya from Olympus, Executive Vice President and Representative Director. The company aims to achieve target sales of 70 billion yen by 2020.
