The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) of Japan has released statistics for 2020 showing the true impact of the pandemic in the imaging industry. Total digital camera shipments were down 41.6% by volume to 88,86,292 units and 29.4% by value to 4 billion dollars. Compact cameras and D-SLRs accounted for most of these losses. Mirrorless cameras were also not spared and showed a 25.9% decrease in volume. Nevertheless, in 2020, mirrorless cameras sales overtook D-SLR cameras in units (2.93 million versus 2.37 million). The silver lining was that the average unit sale price of mirrorless cameras continued to rise and left D-SLRs far behind (over 800 dollars for mirrorless and under 400 dollars for D-SLRs). This probably saved the industry in 2020.
2021 is expected to be a year of stabilisation.
