The imaging industry continues to confound the pundits. Given the rapid changes in technology and trends, only a fool would venture to stick a head out for censure.
Not so long ago, compact cameras were pronounced dead by the ‘experts’. Not only have compact cameras revived, they are in short supply. Point and shoot cameras are setting the sales charts on fire. New bridge cameras are being launched to enthusiastic response. In select countries, film is experiencing a revival and analogue cameras are in demand. Obituaries were written for the Micro Four Thirds format but MFT cameras and lenses are a big favourite with wildlife photographers.
The only segment in the market that is rapidly declining is the DSLR segment but this was expected once mirrorless took over.
The fact is that, today, the buyer has a variety of options and is fortunate that a decision can be taken from a variety of options.
