Mid-level D-SLRs usually are the most underrated of cameras. These are the price-holders for a segment of users who cannot afford the best, yet are not ready to settle for entry-level models. The 77D is a possible replacement to the 760D.
Design and Build Quality
The Canon 77D has a polycarbonate exterior, which feels sturdy for a midlevel D-SLR. The switches and buttons also made well. The camera has a tilt-and-swivel mount for the LCD, which helps to protect the screen when not in use. The lens mount and tripod receptacle are metal. The camera has a status LCD on the top panel, which can be lit up in case you find it difficult to read.

The EOS 77D is a Digital SLR, using an APS-C (Approx. 22.3 x 14.9mm) CMOS sensor for imaging, aided by a DIGIC 7 image processor. The camera offers 24.2 million effective pixels and accepts Canon EF mount lenses, except EF-M lenses. While shooting with the optical viewfinder, the camera uses TTL secondary imageregistration autofocus, assisted by phase-difference detection with dedicated AF sensor. Switching to Live View will activate the improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. The camera features 45 all cross-type AF points with the central dual crosstype focus point activated at f/2.8. The camera supports One-Shot AF, AI Servo AF, AI Focus AF and Manual focusing with AF area selection modes being Single-point, Zone, Large Zone and Automatic selection. In Live View mode, it provides Face + Tracking, Smooth zone and Live 1-point AF options with along with touch focus feature.
The camera offers Evaluative (315 zones), Partial, Spot and Centreweighted average metering. Exposure can be compensated up to ±3 stops in 1/3 or 1/2-stop increments. Touch shutter is available. Sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 25,600, which is expandable up to H, equivalent to 51,200. Exposure can be compensated up to ±5 stops in 1/3 or 1/2-stop increments. Auto Exposure Bracketing provides an option of ±2 stops in 1/3 or 1/2-stop increments. The camera provides Interval timer shooting. The 77D uses an electronically-controlled, focal-plane shutter, which provides shutter speeds from 30 to 1/4000 seconds along with Bulb mode. Flash synchronises with the shutter up to 1/200sec.
Still images are recorded at maximum dimensions of 6000 x 4000 pixels in Raw (14-bit) or JPEG format with an option to record both simultaneously. The camera can shoot continuously still images at a maximum continuous speed of 6.0 frames per second. You can shoot a maximum of 190 JPEG Large and Fine, up to 21 Raw or up to 19 Raw + JPEG images in a burst. Drive modes available are Single, High-speed continuous, Lowspeed continuous, Self-timer (2 or 10 second delay) and Remote control. Videos can be recorded in MP4 or MOV format at the best quality of 1920×1080 (59.94p / 50.00p / 29.97p / 25.00p / 23.98p). The 77D does not allow you to capture still images during movie recording.
The 77D offers shooting modes such as Scene Intelligent Auto, Flash Off, Creative Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, Special scene modes and Creative filters while special scene modes include Group Photo, Kids, Food, Candlelight, Night Portrait, Handheld Night Scene and HDR Backlight Control. Creative Zone modes available are Program AE, Shutter-priority AE, Aperture-priority AE and Manual exposure. Creative Filters include Grainy B/W, Soft focus, Fish-eye effect, Water painting effect, Toy camera effect, Miniature effect, HDR art standard, HDR art vivid, HDR art bold and HDR art embossed. The camera features Picture Styles such as Auto, Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Fine Detail, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome and User Defined (3 settings).
White Balance options include Auto (Ambience priority), Auto (White priority), Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten light, White fluorescent light, Flash and Custom. White Balance correction and White Balance bracketing are available. The camera also provides Highlight Tone Priority and Lens Aberration Correction including Peripheral illumination, Chromatic aberration and Distortion correction.
The 77D uses an eye-level pentamirror viewfinder with diopter adjustment along with a fixed, precision matte focussing screen. The camera uses a 3.0-inch capacitive touch enabled, fully articulated TFT colour LCD screen with approximately 1.04 million dots. Both the EVF and LCD provide Grid Display and Electronic Level. While the EVF provides a single grid option, the LCD provides three options. The 77D offers depth-of-field preview. The built-in retractable auto pop-up flash has a Guide Number of approximately 12m at ISO 100 and covers approximately 17mm lens angle of view. The flash recycles in approximately three seconds. The camera has a standard accessory shoe (hot-shoe) and is compatible with EX-series Speedlites. Flash metering is through E-TTL II autoflash method and flash exposure can be compensated up to ±2 stops in 1/3 or 1/2-stop increments. You can trigger an external flash wirelessly with the camera.
The EOS 77D uses an SD/SDHC/ SDXC memory card for storage, and it is compatible with Eye-Fi cards. The camera features Wi-Fi and NFC. Interface includes Hi-Speed USB, GPS Receiver, HDMI mini OUT, External microphone IN, 3.5mm stereo mini-jack and Directional Stereo Microphone connections. The 77D is powered by a Li-ion battery pack LP-E17 (supplied). The camera measures approximately 131.0 x 99.9 x 76.2mm (W x H x D) and weighs approximately 540g including battery and memory card.
