With 2026 upon us, it is time to make some forecasts and predictions for the imaging industry.
1. Compact camera sales will continue to increase. In 2025, both the Fujifilm X 100 VI and the Ricoh GR IV sold exceptionally well. Expect new launches from Canon, Olympus. Panasonic and Sony.
2. Nikon should be launching a successor to the Z 9 and the Z 7 II.
3. Sony’s Alpha 7 R series may see a successor.
4. A new APS-c camera in the X- Pro series is likely from Fujifilm.
5. Panasonic will launch a successor to the full frame S 9 with more powerful lenses. The S 9 may also be launched in the Micro Four Thirds mount.
6. OM system will launch their first really new micro four thirds camera. Their Tough camera is selling well and may be updated.
7. Sigma and Tamron will be making news with more innovative lenses.
8. Chinese lens manufacturers will make further inroads in the lens market. Viltrox is the one to watch. 2026 may also see the Chinese launch a brand new body in the Micro Four Thirds format. A rangefinder from China can also not be ruled out.
9. Stacked sensors and AI will be found in more and more cameras. Barring unforeseen ciccumstances, 2026 should be a steady year for the imaging industry.
Smart Photography wishes all its stakeholders and readers a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!
