Beautiful Mind

June 3, 2011 by spwordpress

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Delhi based fashion photographer, Vivek Singh has produced a body of work to fill an entire library.

The fashion photographer is quite prolific and has developed a sense of style that is both extraordinary and fresh. Beginning his career as a writer in Bengaluru, Vivek moved to Delhi in 2002 to hone his skills as a television producer, while accentuating his skills in the still medium. In 2004, he made the absolute shift. Initially moving to the north-east to commence a long-term project on under-reported issues. This is where he developed his visual signature in photography, which is a blend of documentary, fine art and glamor. To view more of Vivek’s work visit www.viveksinghphotography.com

Why Fashion Photography:
My love is not for a particular genre in photography, but for the art of being able to generate images. Yes, I like fashion because it involves creating something other than shooting something that is already exists out there. My work essentially (at least to me), reflects the emotion I am going through when I make an image.

Make up and Props:

It is important to me that the make up is perfect. I don’t like the whole idea of correcting everything in post-production. The use of props is debatable. I like to shoot people in a particular setting. It could be a studio or outdoors. It is important to realize that in fashion, the person I am shooting is dominant. The fact that a fashion image looks great is only because you’re able to make them look good. Lighting, for example is prime, but not at the expense of losing yourself in the technical aspects alone. In fact, the subject gets precedence over everything else.

Technique and Lighting:
I learnt photography by breaking it down into simple understandable elements. As such lighting is the core, but essentially I like to shoot in simple non- intrusive lighting set ups. It is important to know what and how to use a particular type of lighting, but only if it helps make the image stronger in concept and in detail, or else it is an exercise in futility. It amazes me how only a handful people trust sunlight as a potent source, especially while shooting outdoor fashion assignments.

Dream Assignment:
Ha ha ha… I think it will go like this. Definitely I will have an awesome shoot someday, but I will only realize it the day after its execution. But for the moment, I like to take things as they come. In fact, I would love to be a photographer whose creativity will be remembered as something that is effortless, and wherein the photographer is totally invisible.

Favorite Image:
This particular image is a personal favorite because it is a moment in time. This was an outdoor shoot for a friend who incidentally was the fashion editor of a leading fashion magazine. The model, Miriam Ilorah is a dream to work with, for she is like sheer poetry in front of the camera. The shot was captured while I was standing precariously on a ledge, and the frame must have lasted a minute or two. However, it set the ball rolling for the rest of the day, because everything happened to fall together into place accordingly. The mood was ecstatic since only a reflector was used for fill.
