Beauty in Chaos…

July 15, 2011 by spwordpress

Harris Back-er, spends his time wrap-ping his artis-tic sensibilities around a commercial framework.

After get-ting his Masters  in Visual Communication from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, he moved on to establish ‘Full Meals Creative Studio’ in Benga-luru. Over the years, he’s built up a kaleidoscopic folio featuring architecture, people, and advertising campaigns. His photo-graphs are beautiful, but quiet, simple, but intricate. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that his vintage style brings a touch of nostalgia to his subjects. Apart from his photographic skills, he is also a film maker and graphic designer

In an exclusive the artiste discusses his point of view on different aspects pertaining to his photography:

Design and Aesthetics“Aesthetics is everything”, as any photographer will tell you :). In my im-ages I tend to use colors, shapes, lines, personality etc. to capture beauty in chaos and chaos in beauty . It is  a very in-stinctive and emotional awareness that gives my work it’s meaning.

Role of Technique and Lighting Technique and Lighting to me fulfills a function which is to achieve the image that I vi-sualize. There is nothing sac-rosanct about the method-ology. The image suggests the methodology and many a time unconventional ap-proaches are what works best. Often it is my willing-ness to improvise that allows me the spontaneity in such situations.

His Favorite Image:
It has to be the picture of my daughter soon after her birth. In fact, many  parents capture a mental snapshot of that particular moment. Moreover, being a photographer it is almost like an occupational obligation. Jokes apart, when ever I look at this picture I am humbled by the beauty of the world.

Most technically challenging frame :

The technically challenging frame could be interpreted in any way. It could be a logistical nightmare on the set, or a poor brief falling on your shoulder out of which you have to create magic, etc.

The showcased shot of the theatre was for a seating company which wanted their seats to be highlighted in a space where lighting was mostly in the wrong place and at isolated spots. I had to contend with seats which were in strong shadows and contrasting areas where they were completely burnt out. As I wanted to capture the mood of the space, I didn’t want to light the entire space with fills. As such I set a long exposure and walked the space, filling light on the seats with the torch on my mobile phone, all along trying to be careful not to let light leak into the frame.

The shoot had to happen in a half hour window for I had to shoot the frame between the auditorium being cleaned and the morning show. And there was no time to setup the lights in the first place. As they say necessity is the mother of invention, this frame is the typical answer to it.
